School-wide Positive Behavior Support Team Training Manual
Purpose
Purpose of this Manual
This manual is designed for individuals who are training school-wide PBS
teams and coaches in the practices and principles associated with School-wide Positive Behavior Support.
The purpose of the manual is to assist trainers in the design of training session content, training activities
and on-going training evaluation.
School-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools
to adopt and sustain the use of effective behavior support practices for all students. School-wide PBS
is a team-based process for systemic problem solving and planning. It is an approach to creating an
environment within which school-based teams create systems change for effective management. School-based
teams apply research-validated instructional and management practices. This manual covers the first years’
content of School-wide PBS team training.
Who Should use this Manual?
This manual is designed for use by individuals who are training school-teams and coaches in the practices
and principles of school-wide positive behavior support. Our assumption is that individuals using this
manual will have been through at least one year of school-wide PBS training themselves, and have direct
experience implementing school-wide PBS in their local school district. Our experience is that trainers
who use these materials will have been team leaders or coaches and have the experience to (a) adapt the
content to fit the needs of local schools, (b) add local examples, and (c) update the content in response
to new research findings.
We recognize that the manual does not provide the detail needed for use by trainers who have not been
through School-wide PBS training, and already worked with teams who have successfully implemented School-wide PBS.
