School-wide Positive Behavior Support Team Training Manual

Process

Year One of a Three-year Process

School-wide PBS is designed around a three-tiered prevention model that begins by establishing a "universal", whole-school approach to defining, teaching, and acknowledging student behavioral expectations. As part of this process a predictable continuum of consequences for problem behaviors is established, and a formal system for collecting and using data for decision-making is developed. The universal practices serve as a foundation that makes the "secondary prevention" (targeted), and "tertiary prevention" (intensive individual) tiers of the prevention model more effective.

Implementation of the full three tiered model typically requires 2-3 years for most schools. The time needed to achieve full implementation depends on (a) the number of elements a school already has in place, (b) the level of administrative support, and (c) access to effective training support. This manual focuses on the first year of the process. Content for on-going training of the secondary and tertiary tiers of the School-wide PBS model can be found in the online library at www.pbis.org.
