School-wide Positive Behavior Support Team Training Manual

Organization

Organization of Training Manual Sessions

The sessions of this manual are organized to provide information and content that experienced School-wide PBS trainers have found most helpful. Each session includes:

Hand-out

This handout is copied and provided to the teams as part of their training handbook.

Working Example

For several sections a working example is included. The purpose of the working example is to provide teams with a description of how other teams have addressed implementation. Trainers are strongly encouraged to create their own local examples to replace the ones provided.

References

A major goal of School-wide PBS training is to deliver evidence-based practices. References are provided (and updated) to document the research support for recommended practices. Where practices do not have full research support, care should be taken to define the logic, and/or evaluation supporting the recommendation.

Activity

School-wide PBS training involves multiple opportunities for school teams to work with the content and make it fit the specific strengths, needs and challenges of their school. The Training Manual includes specific recommendations for team activities. At times team activity will be the same as the recommended evaluation activity.

Evaluation

School-wide PBS training emphasizes self-assessment as a direct strategy for action planning and on-going evaluation. As such, training sessions include (where relevant) recommended self-assessment instruments. These instruments are in addition to those used for major Implementation and Outcome evaluation.

Blank Forms

It is recommended that teams/coaches be provided with blank/master copies of any forms (i.e., activities and evaluation) so that teams feel free to write on the ones provided in their training manual and still have access to unused forms for future use.

Trainer Power points

The Power point slides are for the Trainer to use. Each presentation matches the Handouts and have been used successfully by experienced trainers. We are in the process of developing a Trainers Manual with notes and additional guidelines. Trainers are encouraged to personalize, and localize the training content by changing working examples and tailoring forms and activities for their state/project. The slides offered in this manual are provided because some teams prefer to have the handout and the slides.
