Coaches Checklist

School-wide PBS team training should always occur with the active involvement and training of local “coaches.” A PBS Coach is typically a person with advanced training in behavioral theory, who works for the local school district or consortium, and is able to attend monthly meetings at a school. The coach is not a trainer, but is someone who receives advanced support during the training process, provides leadership within the school-wide team, helps to coordinate the evaluation process, and provides the sustainability needed when a school experiences transitions in administration, team membership or policy.

Coaches typically are recruited as schools begin the implementation process, receive an initial orientation, participate with their teams in the on-going team training, and have access to trainers for advanced support. The role of “coach” may be fulfilled in a number of different ways, and the important goal is to provide school-teams with access to individuals who fulfill the functions, not stipulate on a specific job description.

The key message is that School-wide PBS trainers always train and support coaches as they train school-wide teams.
